Tech is Global

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

Technology has innovation on its side, and that boosts both productivity and demand. (How many people do you see lining up for a new detergent or soft drink formula the way they do for the latest iPhone or iPad?) That excitement is spreading around the world. In fact, the sector is now considered a second-tier play on emerging markets growth. As consumers in India and China become wealthier, they’re quick to upgrade the technology they use. Those markets present a phenomenal opportunity for many sub-sectors, particularly telecommunications equipment. Despite cut-throat competition between Apple, Research in Motion and Google, all three of them are enjoying strong growth in global smart phones sales.

Tech is (almost) Recession-Proof

Friday, October 14th, 2011

Technology products have increasingly become part of our daily life. These are no longer discretionary spending items: in many businesses, if you don’t have a Blackberry or an iPhone you can’t compete. Our unwillingness to give up such technology once we’ve grown accustomed to it has made the sector more defensive in nature, and more resistant to economic down cycles.

Yes, companies may put off upgrading their computers, software, routers and servers during times of hardship, but they won’t give them up altogether. Besides, corporate balance sheets are flush with cash right now – unlike debt-laden consumers and governments. Right now corporations are capable of spending big bucks on technology to improve productivity, making tech one of the few sectors that could see above-average growth despite the current hard times.

Tech is Transparent

Monday, October 10th, 2011

Tech companies got a bad rap during the dot-com bubble for promising the moon before they even has a penny in earnings. Internet darlings that actually lost money on most of their sales still saw their stock prices shoot up. But today it’s easier to understand a tech company’s earnings reports and balance sheets than those from companies in other sectors. Some five years ago, new accounting rules paves the way for cleaning up the stock options fiasco. Since then, earnings reports have become more transparent, with less room for accounting shenanigans. Unlike banks, which have a zillion ways to hide bad loans, or commodity-based companies, which use complex models to estimate the value of their reserves, technology companies’ earnings are largely made up of simple, pure cash flow.

Getting Serious: What does Market Volatility mean for you?

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

During an uncertain market, it’s understandable to be concerned about how market events could affect your investment. But it’s important to remember that market volatility is a normal part of economic cycles. It presents an opportunity to invest in stocks or other market based investment at discounted prices. If your investment portfolio is based on your risk tolerance and is properly diversified across many sectors, investment styles and geographic regions, short-term volatility will have little, if any, effect on your long-term retirement and savings goals.

It’s also important to remember that, historically, there have been various major events that had dramatic short-term impacts on the markets. Looking back, these are now mere blips on financial market radars. Generally, people who stay invested are typically rewarded in the long run.

Long Term View of Investment Strategies

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

During an uncertain or “wavering’ market , it is more than understandable to be concerned about the workings  of financial markets and their underlying systems and controls.  Do they come back over time ?  Do the essentials always work themselves back into play ?  Does market equilibrium and equilibrium’s kick back.  Or is it a case of those foolhardy M.B.A.’s and it can be best said that they are little different than politicians in that they always take credit for positive changes and effects while blaming others and their predecessors for any negative effects and that a monkey throwing darts at the wall could of done just as well , if not better ?

On the other side of the fence it is most important to always remember that market volatility is a most normal part as well as vital component of economic and financial cycles.  It keeps the market honest and on track so to say.  Thus these times present buying opportunities when all the others are staying out the race and it is a tremendous buying opportunity for you , with less and indeed little competition from other investors in the financial forex marketplace.  You will be able to purchase your investments at most highly discounted big discounted prices.  It can be said that when the market gets tough , the top investors are out there purchasing.

If your investment portfolio is based on risk tolerance and is properly diversified across the waterfront  across the full range and many sectors, investment styles and geographic regions,  it can be well said that the short term volatility  and volatility will have little , if any effect on your long term goals and actions.

Lastly if is also important to note , emphasize and remember that ,historically. there have been many market events over time and history that have had dramatic short-term impacts on the financial markets and marketplace.  Looking back , over time  and expertise , it can be said that generally that these have been “blips” on the financial market radars.  Its all in the long term view.
