The Full Employment Deficit or Surplus

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

The extra government expenditure is a new injection and income will rise until a matching flow of withdrawals has been generated. Since taxes are only one of several withdrawals, it follows that the rise in taxes must be less than the rise in government expenditure.

It is not clear that we can talk not only about the actual (or “current”) budget deficit or surplus at the present level of national income, but also about the potential budget deficit or surplus at any other level of national income, given current rates of taxes and expenditures. The potential deficit or surplus of particular interest is the one that would occur if the economy were at full employment; it is called the full-employment balance. Notice that the current deficit will be larger than the full-employment deficit for any economy whose current income is less than full-employment income; the reason is that as income rises, the yield from a given set of tax rates rises and hence the deficit falls.

Fine Tuning

Monday, September 12th, 2011

In the heydey of Keynesian fiscal policy in the 1950s and 1960s many economists throughout the world advocated the use of fiscal policy to remove even minor fluctuations in national income around its full-employment level. These economists felt that G and T could be changed frequently and by relatively small amounts to hold national income almost exactly at its full-employment level. When this is attempted, fiscal policy is said to be used to “fine tune” the economy.

The feasibility of fine tuning depends on, among other things, the length of the so-called decision lag-the lag between perceiving a problem and getting a decision to initiate these.

Some Common Myths about Inflation

Monday, July 25th, 2011

Myth #1: Any increase in wages causes cost-push inflation

Wage increases will only force up labor costs per unit of product if wages rise faster than output per worker-hour (productivity). Figure 12-4 shows the example of a fradistat factory in which output per worker-hour is 100 fradistats in 1982, and 103 fradistats in 1983. Over the year, wages rise from $7.00 to $7.21 per hour, but labor costs per unit do not rise, because productivity has risen at the same rate as wages (3 percent per year). However, if wages rise faster than productivity, the situation is quite different, as Figure 12-5 shows. Here, wages have risen by 10 percent, while productivity has risen by only 3 percent. The result is that labor cost per fradistat rises considerably – by 7 percent. The productivity increase “absorbs” or offsets 3 percent of the 10 percent wage increase, leaving 7 percent to “spill over” into cost increases. The result will be pressure on prices.

Thus, only if wages rise faster than output per worker-hour will wage increases cause increases in labor costs per unit and thus put upward pressure on prices.

Long Term View of Investment Strategies

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

During an uncertain or “wavering’ market , it is more than understandable to be concerned about the workings  of financial markets and their underlying systems and controls.  Do they come back over time ?  Do the essentials always work themselves back into play ?  Does market equilibrium and equilibrium’s kick back.  Or is it a case of those foolhardy M.B.A.’s and it can be best said that they are little different than politicians in that they always take credit for positive changes and effects while blaming others and their predecessors for any negative effects and that a monkey throwing darts at the wall could of done just as well , if not better ?

On the other side of the fence it is most important to always remember that market volatility is a most normal part as well as vital component of economic and financial cycles.  It keeps the market honest and on track so to say.  Thus these times present buying opportunities when all the others are staying out the race and it is a tremendous buying opportunity for you , with less and indeed little competition from other investors in the financial forex marketplace.  You will be able to purchase your investments at most highly discounted big discounted prices.  It can be said that when the market gets tough , the top investors are out there purchasing.

If your investment portfolio is based on risk tolerance and is properly diversified across the waterfront  across the full range and many sectors, investment styles and geographic regions,  it can be well said that the short term volatility  and volatility will have little , if any effect on your long term goals and actions.

Lastly if is also important to note , emphasize and remember that ,historically. there have been many market events over time and history that have had dramatic short-term impacts on the financial markets and marketplace.  Looking back , over time  and expertise , it can be said that generally that these have been “blips” on the financial market radars.  Its all in the long term view.

Go With the Flow of Risk

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Risk can be said to be a basic and standard factor associated with each and every investment decision or decision.  It can also be stated on the converse that individuals who decide not to invest face a different kind of risk.  Although you cannot completely eliminate risk. especially the basic factors of risk volatility it all boils down to understanding how to incorporate the concepts of risks and risk management underlying factors into your investment decisions and investment decision strategy and strategies.  Otherwise it is like whistling in the wind or alternatively the fabled tale of King Canute.  Although it can always be said that while you cannot eliminate risk you can work to minimize its effects – especially devastating negative effects and in the end effect – learn to live with and minimize negative factors associated with risk and financial investing risk managements.

For starters you can smooth out those highs and lows of the market by contributing a set amount to your plan on a regular basis throughout the calendar year and years.  This strategy is generally called dollar cost averaging.  Invest on a regular ongoing basis rather than  at one or two single shots.

Thus it can be said that “dollar cost averaging”  is an excellent and standard means and way to minimize financial and currency market fluctuations and this maximize your returns overall.  By purchasing the same dollar amount of investments of all types on a regular ongoing basis, you can buy more units of whatever investments or forex financial units , when prices are low.  Similarly or on the other hand , when prices are high , or on the way up , you will be purchasing less or fewer units.  Overall it can be said of the his financial and investment strategy, that you will reduce your average cost per unit over the long term and take the guessing out of the best or proper time when to invest.
